In 1920, there was a conclave that had been brought together in the utmost secrecy over a weekend at Windsor Castle.

His Majesty’s standard was flying very proudly above the Castle, indicating that the Monarch was in residence. Staff could see the cars coming up the long driveway, the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin and the Privy Council arriving along with a key selection of Royal Cousins.

There was Princess Victoria, the Marchioness of Milford Haven along with her husband Louis. Victoria’s sister Irene arrived just behind them.

The royals were followed by Major-General Sir John Hanbury-Williams who came, still very troubled about the telegram.

But there was another group that nobody knew of, only that they were to be admitted into the castle immediately.

The man was dressed with care befitting an audience with His Majesty and assorted others, carefully gathering his satchel of papers before exiting the car.

Charles Gaskell was the emissary from Torchwood, who was the reason for this meeting.
Well, that wasn’t entirely true... he was acting on behalf of the latest victim of the Doctor.

Jack sat in his office, lost in thought with the cap of his pen being tapped against his lips as he tried to allow what he had read to sink into his head.

“Do you know the story of the monster of Glamis?” Jack shook his head and began to re-read, this time his pen scribbling down his train of thought so that he could talk to Ianto and try to get inside the younger man’s head.

“The monster of Glamis?”

Ianto paced the length of the music room, his hand in his hair as he turned around with a sigh that seemed to come from the tips of the man’s shoes.

“How else to explain that there is a secret about me that is only told to the ruling Monarch and that Monarch’s heir but by telling him of another family with a secret that was only told to two other people?”

“Ianto, you’re not a monster.”

“And I’m not really Ianto Jones. We both know this Charles.”

“I’m sure that your young man will understand this. That it had to be kept.”

Ianto couldn’t help but snort at his cousin’s choice of words. “He’s not my young man, he’s older than me.” The hand came down and curled around the photograph on the piano. “I’m involved with Captain Jack Harkness, the head of Torchwood.”

The Prince of Wales had seen many things in his life, but didn’t expect that as he blinked and chuckled. “All the more reason than to knock him out of his boots with this little bit of news. Can I be there when he’s told?”

At Ianto’s stony expression, Charles sobered. “I can’t believe that he was never told about this, that he never knew.”

The younger man shook his head. “I can, because the head at the time was a mean vindictive bitch.”

“You still hold a grudge.”

“Can you blame me?”

Charles shook his head, he knew of the tests that they had run on the terrified then 13 year old.

“No, no I can’t blame you. But as your friend, I can advise you. From what I’ve been told by the council and by my mother about your Captain, he’s seen and done enough to not be shocked by a rift survivor not being driven mad and making something of himself.”

“No, he probably couldn’t but I’ve lied to him before, he’ll be furious.”

Tosh came to say good night to Jack, living up to her promise to Ianto to make sure that Jack didn’t need anything before everyone left for the night.

She was about to knock when she heard Jack mutter. “I hate puzzles.”

“Then I think you’re in the wrong profession.” She called out, peeking at him from around the corner.

“Not helping here Tosh.” He gestured her to come in with a smile. “How can I help you?”

“Ianto asked me to take care of his two favourite things while he was away. Myfanwy is fed and has her treat currently and so I’m here to see what I can do for his number one favourite thing. Do you need anything?”

“A decoder ring would be nice.”

She blinked, pushing up her glasses with a finger. “Excuse me?”

“Ianto left me with a riddle yesterday and now I’m stumped.” Jack turned the monitor around to show her.

“Well, could always talk to him when he calls to say goodnight?”

Jack shook his head. “I don’t think this is something that would work to discuss over the phone.”

“Then wait then, he’ll be back in a couple of days.”

He nodded in agreement. “Would work yes.” Pausing, he looked up again. “Lets go get a bite to eat, my treat!”

Ianto sat drowsily by the fireplace, his head in his hand as he tried to fight going to sleep in these familiar surroundings.

Everything came back to him here, it was more vivid and he could swear that he heard his family around him when he was here in Scotland. Even though technically, he never came here with his family. The only child who had been lucky to come was his sister Olga when she was an infant.

It was one of the reasons that he had originally had his training at Torchwood Two, so that he could be close to the family.

From there, it was easy to go to Torchwood One.

He reached for his phone and dialled.

“It’s me, I just wanted to check in and to tell you I was thinking of you. I hope the rift is okay and that everyone is well. I’m sure you’ll call me once you’re back in. Try not to get killed while I’m away. Goodnight Jack.”

Jack face palmed when he came back and saw his phone on the desk.

Normally he had it with him and had taken to checking in to see if Ianto had left a message but he hadn’t thought to check to see if he had brought it with him. But after coming back from dinner with Tosh, they had a weevil alert and everything was as chaotic as it could be for a normal night at Torchwood.

As he listened to the message, punctuated with a yawn here and there from Ianto, Jack chuckled to himself.

“Goodnight Ianto.”
