Disclaimer: This is a work of fanfiction. No copyright infringement is intended and the real folks in this own themselves.

Canary Wharf - 2007
The smell of smoke as he rounded the corner to head back to the archives nearly had Ianto bent double, the screams from the terrified making him clamp his hands to his ears and begin to sing old Russian folk tunes in the hopes that it would focus him on his task at hand.
Lisa had reminded him of his sister Anastasia, her sense of fun and mimicry having Ianto fighting the urge to laugh at the most inopportune moments.
He couldn’t fail another loved one, not again. All he could hear as he was burnt by falling debris and had his clock rung by a beam jutting out of the wall, was his mother and that accursed bible quote…
Though thou exault thyself as the eagle, and thou set thy nest amongst the stars, thence I will bring thee down, saith the lord – Obadiah 1:4
As soon as he had started to hear rumours that not all was as it seemed with the ghost shifts, Ianto had had a sense of foreboding the likes of which he hadn’t had since Tsarskoe Selo, hearing his father sobbing through a closed door while his mother comforted him after the Tsar had announced to her that he had abdicated not just for himself, but also for Alexei.
Part of him had such a hard time of letting go of the guilt from the Ipatiev Massacre, he had only been 13 at the time and unbeknownst to him then, mortally wounded. There wasn’t anything he could have done.
“The Doctor could have...” He bitterly reminded himself.
But the doctor didn’t and he had grown up hating the man who saved him... if by saving, he had allowed the Institute to have him.
While part grieved for what was lost, the man he was now was determined to get his girlfriend out of the ruins…

“Did you really have to go there Jack?”
Captain Jack Harkness looked up from signing the last of the paperwork that Ianto had brought to him before having it couriered to London for UNIT.
“Did I have to go where?” He waggled his eyebrows at the Archivist.
“With your new piece of Eye Candy, Miss Gwen Cooper?” Ianto shot back, shaking his head before smiling merrily. “And don’t lie, you’ll go to hell and by hell I mean the land of decaf and rice cakes.”
Jack shook his head, trying not to laugh for he knew Ianto was deadly serious when he referred to the rice cakes.
“What did you want me to tell her Ianto? That this here is Ianto Jones … latest survivor of the I’ve been left behind by the Doctor club who in his off hours is actually the Tsarevich of all the Russias?”
“Tsar, I’m the Tsar in exile of all the Russias, if you’re going to be bandying my title around like that, at least get it right Jack.” Ianto rolled his eyes as he shook his head.
“Oh I almost forgot ... that man is my lover so hands off before I chop them off?” Jack asked innocently.
“Jack…” Ianto whined.

Windsor – 1920
The couple walked silently through the castle grounds, acknowledging the hellos from the staff with a bob of their heads, the staff soon realizing the couple was not in a mood to talk as their body language read easily “Don’t approach.”
“Say something Toria.”
Victoria looked at her husband Louis with foreboding. “They’ve kept him from us. Louie, he should have been with Irene or me. We’re his family, not Torchwood!” She stopped, eyes welling up with tears. “He’s all we have left of Alix!”
The former Prince Louis of Battenberg gathered his wife close, his lips gently bussing her temple before pulling back to look at her. “He’s been ill, wouldn’t surprise me if he wasn’t touched mentally either by all of that. Would you have wanted to be with him in that state?”
“That man.” Victoria hissed in a tone not unlike her sister the Tsarina when faced with something distasteful. “That man said that Alexei had to undergo treatments. What treatments, there’s no cure for his disorder and you know it!”
Louis shook his head before checking his pocket watch. “We can ask him poppet when we go back inside. George should be back from seeing Mary, I’m sure we can get answers because if he has brought her, then gods help that poor fool Gaskell.”
“I want him.” Victoria declared. “I want Sunbeam with us Louis, we can make him happy.”
“Let’s learn to walk before we run, let’s hear what has been done before we figure that out.”

The man moved quickly once the guards had deposited the boy in the lorry alongside the other bodies, the child looked like a discarded rag doll, his face stained with blood.
“I know you’re hurting, shhhh.” The man crooned as he brought an object from out of his pocket and waved it at and over the child, who could barely whisper. “Baba yaga?”
Recognizing the name as a character in Russian fairy tales, the Doctor moved quickly, the child wasn’t supposed to have been mortally wounded and found himself cursing the rift for allowing him to be distracted and nearly miss rescuing the future Hero.
“No, not Baba Yaga … but you have to come with me.” He moved to gather Alexei up, cringing when the child whimpered in pain. He could hear Alexei praying under his breath as he rushed to the TARDIS.

“Let me get this straight, you're royalty?”
Ianto’s eyes were threatening to get stuck in the back of his head while Jack backhanded the back of Owen’s skull. “Stay with the group Owen. You’re going to need to know that Ianto’s…”
“I may be smarter than the average bear, but if you’re going to tell me that he’s a haemophiliac then guess what, I figured that out all by myself a long time ago.” Owen replied, rubbing the back of his head. “What have I told you about hitting me?”
Jack looked like a school boy, all innocent and mischief. “Not to do it unless I buy you dinner?”
Ianto snorted and Owen looked nauseated. “Not on your life Harkness.”
“So then Boy Wonder, how did you figure out my condition?”
Owen pushed away from the autopsy table and returned with Ianto’s file and also with a brown envelope.
“Your records show a pattern of genetic manipulation that coincides with a series of experiments that were done with dire consequences to the test subjects back in the 1920’s.” He waved the flle before putting it back down.
Ianto’s eyebrows rose. “How dire?”
“Congratulations Ianto, you should be turning into a dog within the next year.”
“Well there you go then.” Ianto shot back. “I don’t think I’ll need you after all Jack, I’ll be able to lick my own balls.”
Jack nearly choked, Owen looked frankly amused and Ianto pointed. “What’s in the envelope?”
“That is the result of my checking up on our surplus medical supplies. We have some unknown medicines in there that don’t match anything I’ve ordered.”
Jack looked at Ianto. “You should tell him the truth.”
He nodded. “You know my vitamins?”
Owen nodded. “Yes, why?”
“They’re not vitamins, they’re actually a compound of those medications that the Torchwood team came up that is able to maintain the genetic manipulation and keep the condition dormant.”
Three’s medic took this in for a moment before looking up at the two men. “Who’s the oldest?”
Ianto blinked at Owen's change in demeanour. “You’re taking this well.”
“Just so long as you don’t tell me that you’re able to carry children and can’t die like Jack. I’ll be okay with this and you’re going to have to show me how to make those for you. I want a stockpile here for you now just in case.”
Ianto’s reply was cut off by Suzie announcing that she and Tosh were back and asking if someone could come get the body out of the back of the SUV.
“Come on your Majesty; let’s go hobnob with the common folk.” Owen gestured at Ianto while Jack grinned.

Suzie was on rift and comm. watch that night, the others having disappeared to an excavation site in Pontypridd.
Sitting at her desk with her cleaning utensils, she continued to work on the knife that they had found a few weeks before finding her eyelids were getting heavy. Pushing away from the desk, she decided to go for a walk around the HUB in the hopes of waking up without Ianto’s famous coffee.
It was as she passed by Ianto’s kingdom aka the Archives that she swore that she heard voices coming from inside.
She paused, waiting to see if they began again.
With a shake of her head, she turned around. “Just the wind you stupid girl.” She told herself only to hear it once again, this time addressed to her.
“Come inside, we haven’t much time …”
It was as if her legs weren’t her own as she did as she was told, with the wind ensuring that the door closed behind her with the softest click as she went inside…

Date: 2010-09-09 01:33 am (UTC)As for our Miss Costello, well I think she was more interesting instead of being the first of the red shirts that had to die so that Gwen could shine. So she's going to be around a little longer, because it seemed too tidy to have her kill all these people and then off her at the end of the episode.
